Taclaco's LIFE Report: April 2026
LIFE hit their release date. Mammals Special Edition launched on April 10th, and after months of hedging in this newsletter about LIFE's timelines, I'm happy to eat my words on this one. Production was done early, shipping and customs went smoothly, and boxes were in hand on time. That's a first.
I've opened 3 booster boxes so far. Here's what I'm seeing.
What's Different About This Box
The pack structure changed from the 1st edition. Every standard pack now contains an Extended Art and a Rare alongside your other pulls. The gold pack still has 10 holos. On average, 1 in 2 packs will contain a holo and 1 in 5 will contain a continent card.
Box-exclusive holos are back, and LIFE expanded them across all three box sizes. The Holo Siberian Tiger is exclusive to the Mini Box, Spirit Bear to the Starter Box, and Javan Rhino to the Booster Box. The Javan Rhino has a population of just 76, making it the chase card of the set. These aren't guaranteed pulls, but if you want a shot at a specific one, your box choice matters.
Split Print Run: 10,000 Now, 10,000 Later
The total print run is 20,000 of each box size, but LIFE is releasing them in two batches. 10,000 boxes launched on April 10th, with the next 10,000 coming this summer. This is different from previous releases where all inventory dropped at once.
My read: this is smart inventory management. LIFE saw how fast Birds sold out and how quickly prices spiked afterward. Splitting the run keeps product available longer and gives new collectors and players a second window to buy at retail. It also means we probably won't see the same kind of price surge we saw with Mammals 1st Edition and Birds, at least not until the full 20,000 are out and we can gauge actual demand against total supply.
Extended Arts Are a One-Time Thing
One detail worth flagging for collectors: LIFE confirmed in a March 19th announcement that Extended Arts are exclusive to this Mammals Special Edition. Future 1st edition sets will have Full Arts built in from the start, so there's no need for an EA equivalent going forward. That makes the Mammals SE extended arts unique in the LIFE lineup, and they likely won't be reprinted.
Here are a few of my personal favorites from the set:

A Player's Set, Not a Collector's Set
After opening 3 booster boxes, my biggest takeaway is that the rares and extended arts are heavily weighted toward high-population cards. That's by design. LIFE built this set for accessibility and gameplay, not scarcity. The continent cards, the equal print runs on extended arts, the larger overall print run, it's all geared toward getting more people playing the game.
The market is reflecting that. I know multiple whales, big spenders who were aggressive buyers of 1st edition product, who have cut their purchasing by 75% or more on this set. It doesn't interest them the way 1st edition chase cards do. They're waiting for the 3rd core set, which is a 1st edition release where population-linked holos and full arts will be back in play.
That's not a knock on the set. LIFE needs to grow its player base, and you do that by making product accessible, not by printing another collector-focused set with low supply. But if you're in this hobby primarily for the chase, the Mammals Special Edition isn't where the action is. Set 3 is what the high-end collectors are watching.
Looking Ahead
LIFE confirmed that Set 3 is almost finished and was sent to print at the end of March, with a summer release target. Birds Special Edition is also being finalized for later in 2026. Hitting the April 10th date for Mammals SE builds real confidence in these timelines. I'll be watching the summer window closely.
On the photography set front, LIFE released two new cards since last month. Card #4 is a Harbour Seal photographed by Joanna L. Steidle, and card #5 is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox by Christine Ward, the first photographer other than Steidle featured in the set. We're up to five cards now, all featuring mammals, and the set still doesn't have a confirmed total card count or print run.

That's it for April. Next issue is sent on May 17th.
P.S. - I'm still hunting for a Blue-throated Hillstar holo and California Condor holos. Let me know if you have any available!
