LIFE's Third Core Set Is Official: Fish & Aquatic Invertebrates

Taclaco's LIFE Report: June 17, 2026

LIFE's third core set is Fish & Aquatic Invertebrates and as expected it's a 1st edition. This is the set I've been pointing to since April, the 1st edition the bigger collectors said they were holding out for while they sat out most of Mammals Special Edition. I'm excited to get my hands on the set and open a few boxes.

Four cards are public so far (via LIFE TCG's instagram). The Devil's Hole Pupfish (#7, population 38), Bargibant's Pygmy Seahorse (#19, population 10,000), Great White Shark (#21, population 12,000), and Giant Snakehead (#28, population 40,000).

What We Know

Fish & Aquatic Invertebrates is a 140-card set, up from 130 in Birds and 120 in Mammals. LIFE has been growing the count as they bring on artists and grow the collector base. Also, there are new illustrators for this set, including Josh Gazzard. The print run isn't officially stated, but every prior 1st edition has been 5,000 boxes and LIFE confirms this set is printed in the same quantity as the other 1st editions, so I'm working off that number until I hear otherwise. Which means this is a limited set, and with collectors itching for a new 1st edition, I expect boxes to go fast.

On rarity, it's Full Arts and Holos. No extended arts. Those were a one-time fix for Mammals SE because the original Mammals didn't print full arts. First editions have full arts built in, so there's nothing to patch this time.

The Population Curve Is the Story

Here's what actually has my attention. The pops are running about 10x higher than the same slots in Birds or Mammals. Card #19 in this set is 10,000. In Mammals, card #19 was 1,000. The snakehead in this set at #28 is 40,000 vs the shoebill in birds at 4,000.

Part of that is just biology. Aquatic species exist in far larger numbers than mammals, and a population of 12,000 that reads as at-risk for a shark would be ok for a land animal. However, LIFE still picks the roster, so this is a choice too.

My read: the top 10 stay the true chases, population 100 and under, same as Birds. Everything from the teens up gets a higher pop and a lower barrier to entry. That means more collectors can finish most of the set, more cards change hands, and the secondary market gets more liquid. Some people may not be the biggest fans (myself included), but I do think it's best for the longer term health of this TCG.

A Region-Code Wrinkle

The marine cards use ocean codes (PO, AO, IO), but the pupfish is tagged NA and today's snakehead is As. So it's a hybrid: saltwater species get oceans, freshwater species keep their continent. I'm curious whether that changes anything for continental balance in gameplay. We'll find out more when the set is officially released.

Looking Ahead

There is no confirmed release date yet. LIFE targeted a June release back in March. Since they actually hit their Mammals SE date, I'll guess mid-July and only hedge a little this time. I'd expect the next batch of photography cards to ship alongside the fish set to save everyone on shipping. As a reminder, fish is core set three of five. Reptiles and insects are still to come.

P.S. I'm still hunting for a Blue-throated Hillstar holo and California Condor holos. Let me know if you have any available!
